Food Banks Lose State Aid-Need For Services Grow
October 16, 2011
Charities and agencies that help people who are poor and unemployed are bracing for what could be a flood of needy people seeking help after state welfare rolls are cut by about 41,000 people next month.
Adding to the dire situation: State money collected to help poor people with heating bills remains in legal limbo, and agencies that help poor people are seeing federal and state funding shrink.
According to the state Department of Human Resources, 43 agencies -- food banks and soup kitchens -- have been cut from Emergency Services funding for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1. Last fiscal year, they received a total of $1,261,659 in funding.
Forgotten Harvest Tackles Growing Need For Food In Pontiac
October 15, 2011
The task of overcoming that issue weighs heavily on some emergency food relief organizations serving Oakland County.“We’ve been under added stress for almost three years now,” said Russ Russell, chief development officer of the nonprofit Forgotten Harvest.
Forgotten Harvest rescues usable perishable food items from being thrown out and serves them to those in need.
“The unfortunate thing is while we grow at the incredible rate that we are, it’s not enough,” Russell said.
“It’s very difficult for us to know that there are hungry children that will go to bed to sleep tonight without any food and knowing that we as Americans throw away about 25 percent of all edible food that is really good.”
Russell said Metro Detroit is in a hunger crisis, whether people realize it or not.
