…Not all food pantries have been able to stay open during the crisis. Many rely on volunteers to distribute food, and they often are senior citizens who can be more vulnerable to the coronavirus’ worst outcomes. As a result, many pantries had to shut down in order to protect their volunteers.

Oak Park’s Forgotten Harvest typically distributes food to as many as 250 pantries, said Chris Ivey, director of communications for the nonprofit. That number is down to about 127 pantries in southeast Michigan and dropped as low as 75 earlier in the crisis because many had to shut down over safety concerns.
